The Power of Essential Oils

The Power of Essential Oils

Aromatherapy (also known as essential oil therapy) is a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. Using aromatic essential oils, aromatherapy can be used to improve the health of the body, mind and even spirit. The practice of using plants and herbs medicinally dates back to prehistoric times where, evidence shows, Juniper berries were used for their antiseptic properties. These days much research has been carried out into the use of essential oils, both medicinally and for therapy, and there is now great evidence of the benefits.  We’ve handpicked some of our favorite and most popular essential oils and outlined the many benefits they can have.

Chamomile (Roman)

You might know chamomile best for its use in tea but the daisy like herb is also a very popular essential oil. Chamomile can be used in a number of ways: rub into your temples for relief from headaches; mix with a carrier oil and apply to dry skin for a soothing effect, or massage into sore and aching muscles for relief from pain. Chamomile can also simply be added to your diffuser to fill the room with a calming aroma, perfect for before bedtime.

Frankincense

Regarded as the most highly prized essential oil, Frankincense was valued higher than gold by the Egyptians and was often buried alongside mummies in their tombs. Now a days Frankincense is often used during prayer and meditation because of its ability to still and focus the mind. Add to your diffuser and enjoy a moment of peace and reflection.

Lavender (High Altitude)

Easily the most popular of all the essential oils, for most lavender is associated with relaxation, but its benefits go much further. Lavender has antiseptic properties meaning its great for cleansing and healing wounds. We recommend High Altitude Lavender as the exceptionally high levels of Linalyl Acetate (an Ester with antiviral and antibacterial abilities) aid in its abilities to improve sleep and general well-being. Add a few drops into your diffuser or mix with a carrier oil and apply directly onto the skin.

Patchouli

The ultimate essential oil for your skin. Suitable for all skin types from dry and cracker to oily skin and those who suffer with acne. Patchouli has even been used to treat eczema, dandruff and psoriasis. Known for its earthy and rich fragrance, this is the only essential oil which improves over time, just like a fine wine. Mix Patchouli with a carrier oil and massage into damaged tissue to aid in repair and improve appearance.

Peppermint

Many essential oils can be used to improve digestion issues; however, peppermint is arguably the most effective of them all. With its strong anti-inflammatory properties Peppermint is an essential in any natural medicine cabinet. Not only is Peppermint great for your digestion, it is also strongly invigorating, meaning it can be used to refresh a tired mind. Need a little help concentrating? This is the essential oil for you!

Tea Tree

The miracle essential oil that everyone is probably familiar with the smell of, most commonly perhaps from its use in spot treatments. That’s because Tea Tree is highly cleansing and can in fact be used for any type of infection, perhaps most usefully in the treatment of a cold! Definitely an oil to have stored away just in case you’re hit with a spell of the winter, or summer, cold!
